Top Destinations for a Warm and Toasty Winter Break

Now that the clocks have gone back, it is clear that autumn is in full flow. The leaves are quickly dropping from the trees and the air has a certain frosty chill to it. Even though winter has not got its icy grip around us yet, we are all beginning to shiver more as we stand on the station platform every morning. You probably agree that the feel of sun on your skin seems a distant memory, and you are starting to wonder whether the days will ever begin to get longer again.

However, you don’t need to be aggrieved that it is the autumn, as it is all about your mindset. I like to think of autumn as the perfect time to plan my winter season, and the highlight of it is always the warmth. I’m not talking about sitting next to the fireplace (although this is very cosy); I’m referring to the holiday I take each year to escape the doom and gloom that is the UK winter. Sounds tempting, doesn’t it? So if you’d prefer to sit on a sunbed with the sand and sea around you, instead of sludging your way up the high street, here are a few destinations you could consider for a toasty winter getaway:

Antigua

Have a look online and you’ll find plenty of winter sun holidays to Antigua. The best time to go is in or after December as this is when the rainy season ends. From this point you could expect temperatures of at least 23 degrees Celsius each day, which would feel like a sauna compared to those in the UK. This is my all-time favourite destination and each time I go I buy a new pair of Havaianas from Flip Flip & Away as I know it’ll always be warm enough to wear them on one of the 365 beaches on the island.

Goa

Perhaps you might prefer Goa where there will be about 10 hours of sunshine each day, and realistically you will always be able to go to the beach as there is only around 10mm of rainfall in December. And with temperatures reaching up to 32 degrees Celsius, you’ll definitely want to pack plenty of swim wear.

Tenerife

If you don’t want to travel as far as Antigua or Goa, you can still experience warmer temperatures than those in the UK. The Canary Islands make a good compromise as December has an average temperature of 16 degrees Celsius. That makes these islands warmer than most other destinations in Europe during the winter months, although there might be more rain that accompanies the temperatures. Yet Tenerife still attracts plenty of visitors at this time of the year as it is more comfortable for exploring, so it might be the perfect time to check out attractions like Mount Teide.

For more winter sun destinations, simply have a look online. You’ll find that tour operators will often have a separate section of their website dedicated to these holidays; after that it is easy enough to do a quick search on Google to find out what the weather is likely to be when you arrive.
